From Kathmandu we fly on any domestic carrier to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj , a town in the western Terai , is very close to the Indian border and the Bardia Nationl Park. It is a major transport hub for western, mid-western and far-western regions of Nepal. Overnight at hotel or lodge.

  • Day 02: Nepalgunj to Juphal (2475m) flight and Juphal to Dunai (2140m)/ 3 hrs Trek

Today we take a 35 minutes long flight to Juphal- the starting point for Norbung Kang Peak Climbing in Dolpo.

As we begin the trek, the trail ascends southeast high above Thulo Bheri Valley followed by an hour long walk through maize fields to to reach the village of Kalagaunda.

We trek by the southern bank of Bheri River and pass Roop Ghar with the water mill and finally reach the village of Dunai (2140m).

Dunai is quite a big mountainous town with schools, health post, government offices, police station and tourist class lodges. We will stay overnight in one of the lodges in Dunai. Probably at Pala Guest House.

  • Day 03: Dunai (2140 m) to Lingdo (2391 m)/ 5 hrs

As the Expedition to Norbung Kang begins today, we walk through the beautiful mountains, which resemble the mountains of European Alps. The rock-strewn trail in this section of the trek is adorned with the scores of blue pine trees. Soon we get to see the wonderful view of snowcapped mountain peak Kang Tokal (6294 m).

As every other typical trekking day in Nepal, the trek has frequent ups and downs along the trail that stretches beside Thuli Bheri River. We cross pass few villages that enjoy Tibetan Buddhism- Byasghar a Magar settlement among others is a memorable stopover.

Beyond Byasghar, the trail to Upper Dolpo becomes more challenging with narrowed rocky sections. At the end of day’s trek we arrive to Lingdo. A small village with abundant camping sites, Lingdo is ideal point for the overnight stay.

  • Day 04: Lingdo (2391 m) to Laina Odar (3370 m)/ 6 hrs

As today’s trek gains the elevation of almost 1000m, it begins with the gradual uphill climb. Throughout the trek, the picturesque view of cliff hanging villages like Sarakot continues to feast our eyes.

Trekking further we walk clockwise around the mani-walls and chortens, savor the view of Kang Tokal and lush vegetation, overcome the challenges of rocky strewn trail dotted with pines and firs and continue to head way up the Thuli Bheri River. At a point, we cross a long and high suspension bridge over the River and arrive to Laisicap.

We will have our lunch here and resume the trek. The strenuous three hours of continuous uphill climb through the pine forest followed by a short downhill climb to the riverbed, and a final push on the levled trail for a very short period brings us to Laini Odar. Overnight in the tented camps.

  • Day 05: Laina Odar (3370 m) to Nawarpani (3475 m)/ 6-7 hrs

Today the trek is relative easy but longer. We begin with the uphill climb for forty-five minutes that brings us to the top of small pass.

From the pass, the trek is easy and pleasant with short uphill and downhill walks. The trek most of time goes through the beautiful pine forest and after 5 hours of trek, we arrive to Nawarpani.

  • Day 06: Nawarpani (3475 m) to Dho Tarap (3944 m)/ 7-8 hrs

The dramatic change of the landscapes in the neighborhood beyond, Nawarpani is awesome. Latter half of the trek today, has barren landscapes most of the times. This part of the trek allows opportunities to sight blue sheep or even snow leopard.

The tunnel like trail between the high cliffs ascends steeply up for thirty minutes to a small pass and the next thirty minutes from the pass brings us to Sisaul. Overnight in the tented camps.

Exiting out of Sisaul, the trail ascends to another small pass. Beyond the pass, the valley widens dramatically, which is a sight to view.

We now begin to trek on the trail that is barren and has small bushes, which are also in not many numbers. The bushes also vanish as the trek goes further towards Upper Dolpo.

The trail towards Dho Tarap follows Tarap Khola and soon, we start to sight a settlement with small houses. We trek towards the settlement. Getting closer to the settlement, we come across many mani walls and small chortens.

As we enter the village of Dho, we see the ancient Tibetan culture prospering in this small far-flung village of Upper Dolpo. Overnight in a tented camp in Dho.

  • Day 07: Rest day at Dho Tarap

Trekking for almost a week exhausts everyone. So we are having a day rest at Dho Tarap. However, the day rest doesn’t refer to staying in tents and relaxing.

We would hike around so that we acclimatize well before heading towards the elevated summit of Norbung Kang Peak 6085m. There are plenty of places to see around Dho Tarap. In fact Dho Tarap is a highland settlement dotted with monasteries.

So ask your guide or make suggestions to explore around Dho Tarap. Here we have few major sites that are worthwhile exploring around Dho Tarap.Ribo Bumpa Monastery One of most sacred monasteries of Dolpo Ribo Bumpa Monastery was built almost 1000 years ago by Jigme Nyima Gyaltzen and Lama Tenzing Tragye to get rid of evil spirits wondering in the region. The monastery resembles the architecture of Samye Monastery in Tibet.

As per its name, the Bumpa which refers to vase (one of sacred Buddhist symbols) can been seen here. As the legends related to Guru Rinpoche says that if any damage is made to this vase the Phoksundo Lake bursts to sweep away the lower Dolpo.Kakar Labrang Monastery White valley temple dating back to 12th century, Kakar Gompa is the popular monastery of Dolpo that belongs to old sect of Nyingma- pa sect of Buddhism.

Nine hundred years old monastery has the images of Sakyamuni Buddha, Dorje Phurba and the visions of Guru Rinpoche inside it. Along with the stupa, a book found here has translated 100 words of Buddha.

The vicinity around Dho Tarap has many other important monasteries which include Mekhyim Monastery, Dhoro Monastery and a Bon Gompa of Shipichowk among others.

So make your decision wisely while choosing the monastery you prefer to explore from the pool of many.

En-route to Numa La Base Camp we trek along the easy trail that reaches to Tokyu 4209m. Authentically traditional looking village Tokyu is a widespread village with graceful kani gait and old-fashioned houses. Tokyu is also a delightful place for a photographer on a bright sunlight. The trail beyond Tokyu right away crosses the River to Kanger.

To the northwest direction of the main trail, we see the dramatic views of Shering Gompa which is the house for the monks in the region. The comfortable trail ends here as we begin to slide up along the wild and barren rugged trail to the Base Camp of Numa La 4350m. Overnight in a camp at Numa La Base Camp.

  • Day 09: Numala Base Camp (4440 m) to Danighar (4512 m) via Numa La Pass (5318 m)/ 6 hrs

Today the trek isn’t going to be easy. As the trek begins towards the Numa La Pass it begins to test trekker’s endurance. The trek chases the trail that climbs up to endless ridge top.

The path is not easy as well- gaining higher elevation on the rugged trail is electrifying and maddening experiences of equal measures. However, the demanding trek also rewards with the majestic views of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Churen Himal.

Also the view of fantastic snowcapped peak Norbung Kang dominates the trail. After 4 hours of effortful trek we arrive to the top of Numa La Pass 5310m.

The top of Numa La Pass has quite a spacious saddle with prayer flags fluttering with winds. As we slide down the Numa La Pass, the trail is relatively easier.

The path follows Gyambo Khola and then encounters the spurs before it finally slips into the beautiful meadow of Danighar 4512m. Overnight in a camp at Danighar.

The views from the summit include, majestic Himalayan peaks on our head level, the Tibetan landscapes to the north and wide valleys to the south. After the summit, we trek down back to the Base Camp of Norbung Kang Peak.

  • Day 14: Reserve Day

While in extreme adventurous holidays like peak climbing and expedition, a reserve day is necessary. Norbung Lang Peak looming right in front of our eyes along with other peaks on the ridgeline from the top of the pass is one of the most beautiful views of entire this adventure.

As we descend the pass, we slide into deep ravine and cross the frozen stream to open space. The final push down is a beautiful meadow Yak Kharka 4000m.

Exploring this culturally rich Bon Monastery is fascinating experience. Then we drop down to Phoksundo Lake along steep-sided cliffs. The lake is famous for its magnificent turquoise color and spectacular scenery.

Ringmo village, a typical Tibetan village, is scenic view from Phoksundo Lake. Many beautiful glaciers can be found near and above the lake area.

However, the last view of Phoksundo Lake atop a hill is truly fascinating. Then we slide down for a while and resume the trek along leveled trail to Chunuwar.

Beyond Chunuwar, the trail slides down gently along lush forests of pines and birches to Rechi. Then the series of gentle ups and downs along the trail beside the river throughout brings us to Chepka. This part of trek is almost three hours long.
