Contrasting cultures – Lower & Upper Dolpo
Dolpo, the region rarely touched by modern influence is the home to natives, where they are still into the culture and lifestyle very close to the primitive one. However, the nomadic culture they practice varies in each region they live in because of the diverse creeds they belong since the civilization in these regions came into play.
Dolpo, a sacred land blessed by the precious Guru Rinpoche has scores of ancient monasteries among which the 11th century Shey Gompa is the most prominent and revered Buddhist shrine lying at the base of Crystal Mountain. Similarly, the temple of Tripura Sundari in Lower Dolpo is the famous and holy Hindu Shrine. These facts clearly show the cultural diversity of Dolpo.
Since the nomads of Dolpo live in the elevated harsh condition, the people of Dolpo have to rely on occupations other than agriculture for their livelihood. Livestock and trading are the major occupations the people Dolpo. The tradition of yak carrying loads of herbal medicines and other highland necessities from one place to another across high passes are oldest possible culture in Dolpo, that still thrives there and the scenic sight of yak caravans emerging in the horizon out of nowhere is great as a view.
Dolpo celebrates Lhosar “the New Year” with great enthusiasm and other major festivals remarking special events of the year like cultivating the staple foods and harvesting them are also the great celebrations of Dolpo. These holy celebrations include holy music, uniquely designed cakes made from buckwheat and chanting the sacred text along with dancing in traditional outfits to reflect the mythology and stories.
Few people but diverse culture and lifestyles of the Dolpo awaits traveler to explore the beauty of this primitive tradition and culture which reflects the art of living in such uncommon land.
