Hardships in Dolpo, tourism emerging option to support Dolpa-pa

tourism in Dolpo

Being the region, which is cut off to the rest of the country for almost six months of the year, Dolpo still practices the culture of nomadic trading caravans. The toughest part for the Dolpa-pa, the people of Dolpo is that they have to go through challenging journey across the Himalayas twice a year for their livelihood.

Summer harvest brings good news as they have something to trade. However, the pain of leaving their home for the purpose of trade is a bitter experience. Sowing the barley in their fertile homelands leaving them to germinate on their own they head north, to Tibetan plateaus where they have been conducting trade with their close Tibetan neighbors for centuries.

Wild, rugged and difficulty in accessing, Dolpo claims in housing the highest altitude settlements on earth. The isolated region in far west Nepal that has seen no wheels either demands days long trek to get there or asks hefty amount of money to fly in there. Winters are even tough as the walking option to get into Dolpo becomes closed. Elevated passes covered with snow makes them impassable. But, the pleasant summers melt the snow away making them adventurously navigable.

Dolpo is beautiful and for a trekker it is a heaven. Living there is a different story. Lying in the rain shadow of Mt. Dhaulagiri and Kanjiroba, the limited fertile land in lack of sufficient irrigation water could produce food enough for six months only. Hence the life of Dolpa-pa is tough enough as no modern facilities like roads, electricity, irrigation tunnels and health stations among others are in way low than breakeven point here. The present source of income for the people of Dolpo is harvesting yarsagonpa, which is a seasonal occupation.
