Mugu Village , the isolated paradise in the far west Nepal
Mugu village lies in the Himalayan region of district having same name of Karnali zone. It lies in the northwest of Nepal and close to the border of China. The people of Mugu village are known as “Muguali or Mugum. About 400 people lived in this remote village. Their lives despite being very difficult they depend over farming and cattle herding for living; the amazingly admirable resilience the Muguali is the prime highlight of Trek to Mugu along with the virgin boondocks the district caters for travelers. Due to the close border with China, the natives also go to trade yaks, horses and sheep during close winter, which supports them enormously for their livelihood. The basic needs like clothes, utensils and foods are bought from the district headquarter Gamgadhi or the city like Surkhet or Nepalgunj.
The Mugu village is one of the best destinations for tourist in order to know about the lifestyle of Mugu people and to know the cultural values and traditions of the region. They follow Buddhism and their main festival is “Losar “which means “new year “which falls on the month of February and March. They also celebrate the festival like “ Khaoke “ during the month of Shrawan and “ Nea Sharbha “ during the month of Karthik where young and old people dance, share their emotions and happiness. It is the festival of equality and happiness because people of all ages and financial status come to attend the festival. Keku, Chuba and Bure among others are their main dress. These dresses have been worn for ages in the region. These dresses are made from wool of sheep.
The village is nearby to Karnali River and close to the waterfall named “Charge “. It takes 4 days to reach Mugu village from Jumla and 2 days from Rara Lake. There is no road way or air transportation to get to the village and hence only option to get there is trekking. However, riding the traditional means of transportation like Horses and Yaks could be another option for trekkers who seek luxury. The closest airport is Talcha Airport which is very close to Rara Lake.
