Restricted but isolated paradise Dolpo

dolpo

Until the end of the 18th century Dolpo was a territory of Tibet and was ruled by the powerful flanking kingdom of Lo and princedom of Jumla Dolpo. Later Dolpo came under the province of Lo, the recent day Mustang. After the union of Nepal at the start of the 19th century the coalition with Lo was ripped apart as the border between Nepal and Tibet was drawn. Since then Dolpo belongs to Nepal.
Nepal opened Dolpo for the foreign tourists in 1951 which initiated changes in the several regions of Dolpo. Because of the allegations of Tibetan Khampas (rebels fighting for a free Tibet) were taking shelter in the region, Dolpo was bound to be closed for foreign tourists in 1974. The danger that Republic of China could claim its former territory the restriction was justified during that time. In the year 1989 the southern regions of Dolpo Phoksundo, Tichurong and Dho Tarap were once again opened for the western tourists.

For a long time the population of northern Dolpo has been dominated by the Tibetan speaking inhabitants who settled in the region during various historical phases. In the northern Dolpo the inhabitants follow different Buddhists religions including Nyingma, Kagyu and Sakya and the most famous Bon religion. Similarly, the inhabitants of the south Dolpo practice shamanism (jhankris and dhami) and variations of Hinduism. The inhabitants of Dolpo mainly live depend on farming, trade and livestock for their livelihood.
