Shey Phoksundo National Park, the heart of Dolpo

Nestling in the Trans-Himalayan Region of northwest Nepal, Shey-Phoksundo National Park the largest protected park in Nepal spreads in the area of 3,555 sq. km. With elevation range from 2130m at Ankhe to 6883m at the acme of Mt.Kanjiroba, the park caters eye pleasing landscapes, which are truly spectacular. The lake having unique attributes, Phoksundo Lake, which is also the deepest and the second largest lake in Nepal is the integral water store of the park. The outlet of the lake makes the highest waterfall, which is 167m high. In a very close proximity to the lake lies old Bon Village, Ringmo, which caters authentic Bon Culture.

The park is also the home many Buddhist and Bon Gompas (monasteries). The ideal example is Thashung Gompa, which lies near Phoksundo Lake. It was constructed 900 years ago to protect the rich wildlife of the region.

The climate of the park is also widely diverse as the region spins both ways; to northern and southern aspects of the Himalayan crest. Rainfall in the park mostly occurs during the monsoon (July-September) despite Mt. Dhaulagari and Kanjiroba Ranges act as barrier to restrict rain reaching the Trans-Himalayan Region. The lower parts of the part 1500 mm. of annual rainfall, whereas the upper regions have less than 500 mm. of annual rainfall. Winters in the park are freezing cold and with heavy snowfalls above 2500m.

The park is the home to diverse floral and faunal species. Rhododendron, caragana shrubs, Salix, Juniper, white Himalayan birch, and the occasional silver fir dominate the high meadows of the Himalayas. The floras of Lower region include blue pine, spruce, hemlock, cedar, silver fir, poplar, rhododendron, and bamboo. Shey Phoksundo National Park is the home to several endangered species that include snow leopard, grey wolf, musk deer, blue sheep, goral, great Tibetan sheep, Himalayan tahr, leopard, jackal, and Himalayan black bear among others. Moreover with 6 reptiles 29 species of butterfly, including the highest flying butterfly in the world, Paralasa nepalaica, the park is also an ideal home to over 200 species of birds’ high altitude birds.  Yellow-throated marten, Tibetan partridge, wood snip, white-throated tit, wood accentor, and crimson-eared rosefinch and rare birds found in the park. Yarsagonpa, the high value medicinal crop is one of the major sources of income for the natives of Dolpo.

Despite lying the far-flung isolated region, treks in this piece of heaven on Earth are the most fascinating emerging holidays in Nepal. Fully Boarded Treks, where trekkers sleep in the tented camps and eat the Sherpa cooked food, the treks in Dolpo brings travelers very close to raw nature. Getting to the trek starting point Dolpo is an hour long flight to Nepalgunj from Kathmandu followed by a short flight to Juphal.
