Air Transport is the second favorite transportation in Nepal. While road transportation is the go-to mode of transportation for most of the population, the love for the air travel is gradually growing in recent times.

Either due to construction or natural calamities, roads in Nepal are often damaged or blocked, that causes heavy traffic even in the highway. Air travel other hand is seamless and doesn’t have to rely on any other factor apart from the weather.

Another reason for going popularity of domestic airlines is the spectacular view of the Himalayan range it offers. And some airlines reach places where road transport is still not possible. Both locals and tourists are starting to use air transport more and more in recent times.

There are about dozen or so domestic airlines in Nepal at the moment. And we’re going to talk about top 3 most popular ones. Note: These are the airline corporations to make the maximum number of domestic flights per year.

Nepal Airlines

Nepal Airlines Corporation is the oldest airline corporation in Nepal established by the Nepal government in July 1958 as Royal Nepal Airlines Corporation (RNAC). All of their aircrafts carry the National Flag on the body.

Nepal Airlines is among the few airlines in Nepal that also cover international flights. The domestic flights from Nepal airlines cover all the major cities of the country including some remote areas such as Jumla, Rukum etc. Some of the domestic flights cover places like Phaplu, Khanidanda, Bhojpur, Rukum, Simikot, Nepalgunj, Talcha, Bajura, and Jumla. While some of these places have daily flights, others have specific schedule for certain week days, all of which are subject to change based on the weather condition.

Buddha Airlines

Buddha Airlines is a private company established in 23rd April 1996 and its main office is located in Jawlakhel, Lalitpur. Buddha Airlines has managed to build quite a reputation throughout the years and it’s now regarded among the largest domestic air travel operator in Nepal.

The places covered by Buddha Airlines are Bhairhawa, Bharatpur, Chandragadhi, Janakpur, Kathmandu, Nepalgunj, Dhangadhi, Pokhara, Tumlingtar and Simara.

Along with the consumer flights, Buddha Air also offers air charter flights and daily mountain sightseeing flights, one of which also goes to the Everest region for you to provide an amazing bird view experience of the highest peak in the world.

Yeti Airlines

Yeti is another popular airlines corporation in Nepal which was established in May 1998. Yeti airlines offers domestic transport to ten destinations, which are Kathmandu, Bhadrapur, Bhairahawa, Biratnagar, Dhangadhi, Janakpur, Nepalgunj, Pokhara, and Tumlingtar. While it might seem like those are just 10 destinations, Yeti airlines is in fact the parent company of Tara air.

Tara air is an strictly domestic airlines corporation while Yeti also does international flights. Together, Yeti and Tara air form the largest domestic flight operator in Nepal. While Yeti airlines mainly serves the major cities of Nepal, Tara air is in fact known to serve much of the isolated population of Nepal. For instance, Tara air also flies to Jomsom and Jumla.
