The deepest and the largest lake in Nepal, Rara Lake is considered the Queen of Lakes. Spread out to almost 11 sq. km Rara Lake nestles at the altitude of 3000m inside Rara National Park of Mugu District. A short excursion to Rara Lake with Explore Dolpo is one big holiday in Nepal, that takes you to Nepal’s one of the most beautiful places.

The short excursion of Rara Lake begins at Talcha Airport after the short flight from Nepalgunj. A couple of hours trek from Talcha takes you to this stunning Lake. Enjoy the camping stay at exciting Rara Lake shore and enjoy the luxury of nature. Explore around the equally magnificent vicinity around the lake for couple of days before you fly back to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj Airport.

Rara Lake and Rara National Park are complement to each other. Dense forests of conifers and myriads of species of floral herbal plants surround the lake. Additionally, the stunning views of snow capped peaks reflect on the crystal clear water of turquoise Lake Rara.

The forested hills surrounding Rara are so wonderful and Chhuchemara Hill 4090m among them offers extraordinary views of Himalayan Ranges and the lake itself. It is the best point to sight the striking view of oval shaped Rara Lake with lush vegetation and snowcapped peaks rising just above it. Since in the neighborhood we do not see any signs of civilization so, the chances of sightings the species of migratory birds like Coots and mammals like Red Panda is pretty high during Rara Lake Excursion. Rara National Park is the home to 20 species of mammals 215 species of birds so sighting of alpine animal is quite a possibility during Short Excursion to Rara Lake.

Outline Itinerary

  • Day 01:Kathmandu (1400m) to Nepalgunj (150m)/ flight
  • Day 02:Nepalgunj to Talcha/ flight and Talcha to Rara (2980m)
  • Day 03:Rara to Murma Top day hike.
  • Day 04:Rara to Talcha
  • Day 05:Talcha to Nepalgunj/ flight and Nepalgunj to Kathmandu/ flight
  • Day 01: Kathmandu (1400m) to Nepalgunj (150m)/ flight

    It takes 55 minutes by plane from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. Mostly the flight for Talcha will be mostly in the morning you will have to stay in a hotel at Nepalgunj. The hotel is 10 to 15 min drive from the air port.

    The travel can be done by bus or small vehicles that take 12 to 14 hours from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. If we take the night bus then we reach Nepalgunj by the day but cannot get the plane for Dolpo so will have to stay in hotel for a night.

  • Day 02: Nepalgunj to Talcha/ flight and Talcha to Rara (2980m)

    It takes 45 minutes to fly from Nepalgunj to Talch. While flying, you will see romantic views from the plane.
    After having lunch 3-4 hours trek to Rara Lake. Rara is the biggest lake of Nepal that gives satisfaction with its magnificent look.
    The lake is surrounded by forest and different kinds of flowers can be seen by the side. People can cycle around the lake. Boating facilities are also available. There is a hotel by the side but camping is also available.

  • Day 03: Rara to Murma Top day hike.

    Walking uphill from the lake you get to Murma top. One can see beautiful view of whole lake. Moreover all the villages are also seen from here. One can be satisfied with views from this place. It is very good spot for the photographers too.

  • Day 04: Rara to Talcha

    This day you can again explore the lake and then trek to Talcha the airport to fly out next day.

  • Day 05: Talcha to Nepalgunj/ flight and Nepalgunj to Kathmandu/ flight

    Taking a 45 minutes flight from Talcha you can get into the fternoon flight for Kathmandu on the same day from Nepalgunj.
