Shey Ribo Drukta (Shey Crystal Moutain ) is located at an altitude of 4770m from sea level. It is two camps away from the famous Phoksundo Lake (https://exploredolpotrekking.com/trips/phoksundo-teahouse-trek-11-days/. It is one of the holiest places in the Dolpo region. Dolpo is a land of Buddhism and the Bon religion. Religion plays a vital role in the daily lives of Dolpopas. Every village has numerous pilgrimages. Dho- Tarap has Nya Sampa (New Pilgrimage). Similarly, Tinkyu ( Tinje village) has Kula Nya.
Every 12 years of the Tibetan calendar a ceremony is held at Shey. It has been practiced for centuries. It has been a ritual of the Dolpo people. Along with the time now, it is celebrated more as a festival than a ritual. The Tibetan calendar represents 12 years by 12 different animals. Mouse, Bull, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Monkey, Bird, Dog and, Pig. Every year has its specific pilgrims. For example, Boudhanath Stupa is done in the year of Bird. Mt. Kailash in the year of Horse. And Crystal Mountain in the year of Dragon.

The last festival was held in September 2012 year of Dragon. This time it will be held in 2024 after 12 years. It is a very auspicious festival where all the Dolpopas gather at an auspicious place at an auspicious time. At this auspicious festival, almost all Dolpopas do their best to attend this auspicious festival. Every year this festival gets more attention due to its uniqueness and authenticity. Now tourist people around the world are waiting for the festivals.
The festival starts on the 16th of September in 2024. 16th is the opening ceremony and many pujas and blessing speeches will be delivered by different renowned Lama and Rinpoches. There will be dance, singing, and, drama performances from the different schools of Upper Dolpo. On the 17th there will be a performance of villagers, games, archery and many more.
Similarly, the 18th the full moon is the main day and most auspicious day. On this particular, the people make rounds (Kora) to Crystal Mountain with packed lunch. It will take a whole day to make a round to Crystal Mountain. Some people prefer to make a round barefoot. In Buddhism, there is a belief that doing Kora barefoot will wash your sins. Similarly, people take the crystal from the mountains or stone to their hometown as a blessing or gift from Crystal Mountain. People dance on top of the mountain and enjoy it to the fullest. On the way, you get to visit Tsakhang Gompa one the oldest Gompa in Dolpo. The Gompa is built on the rock wall. Still, Gomchen (Meditator ) stays there and practices Buddhism and prays for world peace.

Day 1 - Aug 06: Arrival Day (1400m)
Arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu, after clearing immigration and customs, you will be met by a representative who will assist you with your transfer to the hotel in Kathmandu. Upon reaching the hotel, complete the check-in process and settle into your room. The rest of the day is at your leisure to relax and explore the surroundings of Kathmandu on your own. Overnight stay in Kathmandu.

Day 2 - Aug 07: Permit and trek preparation day
Gather the passport of all the guests participating in the trek. Our agent will proceed with all the essential permits and other documents. You will have lunch or dinner with the company representative, who will explain further more about the trek.
Self-exploring time to immerse yourself in the beautiful crowded city Kathmandu. Tour to the famous UNESCO-listed world heritage site to have a much deeper connection with the rich culture and tradition. -
Day 3 - Aug 08: Kathmandu – Nepalgunj (1-hour flight) (150m)
Enjoy a delicious breakfast at the hotel in Kathmandu. Afterward, check out from the hotel and transfer to the airport for your domestic flight to Nepalgunj. Board your domestic flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. The flight duration is approximately 1 hour. Upon arrival at Nepalgunj Airport, you will be greeted by a local representative who will transfer you to your hotel in Nepalgunj. Complete the check-in process and settle into your room. The remainder of the day is free for you to relax or explore Nepalgunj in your own peace. Overnight stay in Nepalgunj.

Day 4 - Aug 09: Nepalgunj – Juphal – trek to Dunai 3hrs 45minutes (2140m)
Start your day early morning from the hotel at Nepalgunj. You will have a packed breakfast. Check out from the hotel and transfer to Nepalgunj Airport for your flight to Juphal. Board your domestic flight from Nepalgunj to Juphal, the flight duration is approximately 35 minutes to 40 minutes, depending on weather conditions. Upon arrival at Juphal Airport, you will be welcomed by your trekking guide and other members of the trekking team. Start your trek from Juphal to Dunai. The trek takes about 3 hours and 45 minutes, covering a distance of approximately 16 kilometers. You will gradually descend to Dunai, situated at an elevation of 2140 meters. Enjoy the scenic trails as you pass through beautiful landscapes and local villages, immersing yourself in the cultural and natural beauty of the region. Reach Dunai, a small town in the Dolpo region. Our team will settle down the camp. After settling in, you can take a stroll around Dunai to explore the town and its surroundings. Day 5 - Aug 10: Dunai – Tarakot 5/6 hours (2540m)
Start your day with a nutritious breakfast at your camp in Dunai. Start your trek from Dunai to Tarakot. The trek takes approximately 5 to 6 hours, covering a distance of around 15 kilometers. You will ascend gradually as you make your way towards Tarakot, situated at an elevation of 2540 meters. Enjoy the picturesque trail as you pass through scenic landscapes, forests, and small streams. Take in the natural beauty of the Dolpo region. Along the way you will pass through local villages, offering opportunities to interact with the friendly locals and experience their unique culture. Day 12 - Aug 17: 1st Day of Shey-Gompa Festival ( Opening ceremony) (4343m)
You will participate in the festival. The Shey Gompa festival is a grand and significant celebration that takes place once every 12 years in the remote region of Dolpa, Nepal. This festival holds immense cultural and religious importance for the local people and draws pilgrims and visitors from far and wide. Dolpo is a secluded and picturesque valley nestled in the Himalayan Mountains, known for its rugged terrain, ancient monasteries, and rich Tibetan Buddhist heritage. Shey Gompa, also known as Shey Monastery, is one of the most revered monasteries in the region and serves as the focal point for the festival. The festival is celebrated in honor of Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, an 8th-century Buddhist master who is revered as the second Buddha. Guru Rinpoche is believed to have meditated in the caves surrounding Shey Gompa, bestowing blessings and enlightenment upon the land and its people. The grand celebration will start with prayers and a blessing speech by the renowned Rinpoche and Lamas. The local inhabitants, as well as monks from various monasteries, participate in the festivities, making it a truly vibrant and spiritually charged event. There will be dance, singing, picnic lunch and traditional dance by old age people. Back to camp and have dinner after the first day is over. Day 13 - Aug 18: 2nd Day of the festival (4343m)
During the Shey Gompa festival, devotees and pilgrims undertake arduous journeys to reach the monastery. They come from different parts of Nepal, as well as from neighboring Tibet, to witness and participate in the sacred rituals. Many pilgrims also bring offerings such as butter lamps, prayer flags, and religious artifacts to present the monastery and seek blessings. All the villagers performed famous horse racing and archery. Early evening, they will perform traditional dance and singing to entertain the visitors who have come from far distances.

Day 14 - Aug 19: 3rd Day of the festival ( Full moon / Kora to the Crystal Mountain) 5/6 hours (4343m)
The Shey Gompa festival not only showcases the spiritual devotion of the people but also serves as a means to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the region. It attracts researchers, scholars, and tourists interested in exploring the unique traditions and practices of the Dolpo region. You will be joining the local people for the tour of Crystal Mountain. Which is also an important factor of the festival. It is believed that a crystal mountain is a place where actually, Buddhist masters have a walkthrough. Preserving the tradition of ancestors means, they value it a lot more than it looks like. The kora will take probably, 5-6 hours of walking. You will enjoy the walk as you will find a lot of diversity, the traditional and cultural dressed by the locals will make you more curious about the way of their life. Take time to interact with locals to understand it much better. Back to camp, have tea or coffee and our kitchen team will start cooking the dinner. Enjoy dinner early and off to bed or embrace the peaceful atmosphere and reflect on the day’s trekking experience and take part in local people performing cultural dance and singing.

Day 15 - Aug 20: 4th Day of the festival (4343m)
One of the most awe-inspiring aspects of the festival is the "Masked Dance" or "Cham Dance" performed by the monks. Clad in vibrant costumes and ornate masks representing deities, demons, and various mythical figures, the dancers engage in intricate and symbolic movements to enact ancient Buddhist stories and teachings. The dance is accompanied by traditional music and chanting, creating an enchanting and mesmerizing atmosphere. Enjoy the day at the festival and interact with local people to understand it more deeply. After all the activities, self-exploring time and you could walk around to prepare for the next adventure trekking.

Day 16 - Aug 21: Shey Gompa – Nangdala H.C 5/6 hours ( 4100m)

Begin your trek from Shey Gompa, following the trail that leads towards Nangdala H.C. The trail may involve ascending and a little bit of descending sections as you traverse the rugged terrain and scenic landscapes.
Maintain a steady pace, and take short breaks whenever needed to rest and hydrate. Enjoy the natural beauty surrounding you and take in the panoramic views of the mountains. Find a suitable spot around midday for a rest and enjoy a packed lunch. Take time to refuel, relax, and soak in the serenity of the mountains. Ensure you stay hydrated and take into account the weather conditions. Resume your trek after the midday break, continuing towards Nangdala H.C. Embrace the changing vistas and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the natural surroundings. Arrival at Nangdala H.C. (Approximately 4,600m) A high-altitude camping site in the Himalayas, in the late afternoon or early evening. Set up your camping equipment and take in the breathtaking views that surround you. Spend some time exploring the area and absorbing the peaceful ambiance. Take photographs, relax, and appreciate the solitude of the mountains. Early dinner, off to bed. -
Day 17 - Aug 22: Nangdala H.C – Sallaghari(3660m) via Nangdala pass 6/7 hours (5330m)
Start your day early at Nangdala H.C. Have a hearty breakfast and ensure you have all the essential supplies for the day. Begin your trek from Nangdala H.C., following the trail that leads towards Sallaghari via Nangdala Pass. The trail may involve steep ascents, rocky terrain, and possible exposure to the elements. Pace yourself and take regular breaks to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Upon reaching Nangdala Pass, take a moment to celebrate your achievement and marvel at the panoramic vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Capture the incredible scenery and enjoy a sense of accomplishment.
Begin your descent from Nangdala Pass towards Sallaghari. The trail will lead you through a mix of steep descents and more gradual slopes, offering breathtaking views as you make your way down. Find a suitable spot around midday for a rest and have a packed lunch. Take time to refuel, relax, and appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Keep an eye on the weather conditions and adjust your plans accordingly. Continue the trek towards Sallaghari. Take caution while descending, especially on rocky or uneven terrain. Begin your trek from Sallaghari, following the trail that leads towards Phoksundo Lakeside Village. The trail may involve a combination of ascents, descents, and traversing through diverse landscapes. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the surroundings, including lush forests, rugged terrain, and panoramic views of the mountains. Find a suitable spot around midday for a rest and enjoy a packed lunch. Resume your trek after the midday break, continuing towards Phoksundo Lakeside Village. Follow the trail, keeping an eye out for trail markers and signs indicating the direction to the village. Take a stroll through the narrow alleys and soak in the unique architecture of the traditional Tibetan-style houses.
Engage with the friendly locals, learn about their way of life, and immerse yourself in the local culture. Observe their daily activities and gain insights into the traditional practices that have been preserved for generations. Make your way to the ancient Bon Monastery, which is approximately 6000 years old and holds significant cultural and religious importance. Resume your trek after the midday break, continuing towards Chhepka Village. Follow the well-marked trail, keeping an eye out for signs indicating the direction to the village. Arrive at Chhepka Village in the late afternoon or early evening. Chhepka is a charming traditional village nestled amidst the mountains and is known for its warm hospitality. Our team will settle down the camp in the middle of the village so you have a stunning view of the village at night. They will start cooking. Take some time to explore the village, interact with the friendly locals, and appreciate the unique culture and architecture. Immerse yourself in the serenity of this remote Himalayan village. Early dinner with the warm ambiance of the small village. Early, off to bed. -
Day 21 - Aug 26: Chhepka – Suligad Ghat – drive jeep to Jhupal 4/5 hours (2475m)
Start your day early in Chhepka Village. Have a hearty breakfast and ensure you have all your belongings ready for the journey. Begin your trek from Chhepka Village towards Suligad Ghat. Follow the trail that leads you through scenic landscapes, crossing rivers and forests. Enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings and keep an eye out for wildlife and bird species that may inhabit the area. Reach Suligad Ghat, which is located on the banks of the Beri River. This is the point where you will transition from trekking to a jeep ride. Take a break to rest, refresh, and prepare for the jeep ride. Board a jeep at Suligad Ghat and embark on a scenic drive towards Jhupal. The journey will take you through picturesque landscapes, passing through villages and valleys. Enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains and immerse yourself in the beauty of the region. Reach Jhupal, a small town located in the Dolpa district. This serves as the gateway to the remote Dolpo region of Nepal. Take some time to explore Jhupal, visit the local markets, and soak in the atmosphere of this Himalayan town.

Day 22 - Aug 27: Jhupal – Nepalgunj- Kathmandu with connecting flight (1400m)
Early wake up, arrive at the Jhupal airport, and check-in for your flight. Board the flight to Nepalgunj, which is the closest major city with an airport. The flight will take you to Nepalgunj in 35 minutes. Arrive Nepalgunj, proceed to the domestic terminal, and complete any necessary transfer procedures. Take time to rest, grab some snacks, or explore the facilities while waiting for connecting flight. Check-in for your connecting flight to Kathmandu. Board the flight and enjoy the stunning view as you make your way back to the capital city of Kathmandu. The flight duration will be 1hour approximately. Arrive at the airport in Kathmandu, receive your luggage, and exit the airport. Our personal driver will drive you to the hotel and free time afterward.
