Shey Ribo Drukta (Shey Crystal Moutain ) is located at an altitude of 4770m from sea level. It is two camps away from the famous Phoksundo Lake (https://exploredolpotrekking.com/trips/phoksundo-teahouse-trek-11-days/. It is one of the holiest places in the Dolpo region. Dolpo is a land of Buddhism and the Bon religion. Religion plays a vital role in the daily lives of Dolpopas. Every village has numerous pilgrimages. Dho-Tarap has Nya Sampa (New Pilgrimage).  Similarly, Tinkyu ( Tinje village) has Kula Nya.

Every 12 years of the Tibetan calendar a ceremony is held at Shey. It has been practiced for centuries. It has been a ritual of the Dolpo people. Along with the time now, it is celebrated more as a festival than a ritual. The Tibetan calendar represents 12 years by 12 different animals. Mouse, Bull, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Monkey, Bird, Dog, and, Pig.  Every year has its specific pilgrims. For example, Boudhanath Stupa is done in the year of Bird. Mt. Kailash in the year of Horse. And Crystal Mountain in the year of Dragon.

The last festival was held in September 2012 year of Dragon. This time it will be held in 2024 after 12 years. It is a very auspicious festival where all the Dolpopas gather at an auspicious place at an auspicious time. At this auspicious festival, almost all Dolpopas do their best to attend this auspicious festival.  Every year this festival gets more attention due to its uniqueness and authenticity. Now tourist people around the world are waiting for the festivals.

The festival starts on the 1st of September in 2024. 1st September is the opening ceremony and different renowned Lama and Rinpoches will deliver many pujas and blessing speeches. There will be dance, singing, and, drama performances from the other schools of Upper Dolpo. On the 18th there will be a performance of villagers, games, archery and many more.

Similarly, the 2nd full moon is the main and most auspicious day. On this particular, the people make rounds (Kora) to Crystal Mountain with packed lunch. It will take a whole day to make a round to Crystal Mountain. Some people prefer to make a round barefoot. In Buddhism, there is a belief that doing Kora barefoot will wash your sins. Similarly, people take the crystal from the mountains or stone to their hometown as a blessing or gift from Crystal Mountain. People dance on top of the mountain and enjoy it to the fullest. On the way, you get to visit Tsakhang Gompa one the oldest Gompa in Dolpo. The Gompa is built on the rock wall. Still, Gomchen (Meditator ) stays there and practices Buddhism and prays for world peace.

  • Day 01 - Aug 22: Arrival in Kathmandu (1400m)

  • Day 02 - Aug 23: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj/ flight (150m)

  • Day 04 - Aug 25: Dunai to Chhepka (2720m) 5/6hrs

  • Day 09 - Aug 30: Sallaghari to Nangdala HC (4500m) 6hrs

    Today’s trek is relatively short; we trek for almost three hours to reach Kangla/Nangdala Base Camp 4100m. As the trek begins we ascend up the narrow defile of Tuk Kyaksa River. The trail switches to the opposite side of the river several times. Soon we arrive to a place where the rapids of the river are calmer. We cross the bridge over the river at that point.
    After thirty minutes of walking after the bridge, we come across the wide valley followed by two hours of walking along the canyon brings us to the potential campsite. A walk for a while further reaches to the massive rock slab, which is Kang La/Nangdala Base Camp- our campsite for the night.

  • Day 10 - Aug 31: Nangdala HC to Shey Gompa (4343m) crossing Nangdala pass 7hrs

    Today we trek to the fabled Shey Gompa and the nearby 'Crystal Mountain', the most sacred peak in Dolpo which Dolpo pilgrims circumambulate each summer before the harvest. We are now entering the real Dolpo, and to enter into this mystical land we have to cross the Kangla/Nangdala pass.
    The trek to the top of Kang La/Nangdala Pass is along the graveled trail uphill for three continuous hours. However, all the efforts put to come up to the top of the pass reward us with wonderful views.
    The eye-feast views from the Kang La Pass include Cyrstal Mountain, the mountains in Tibetan territory, and the mesmerizing landscapes of Dolpo. We also have views of the peaks Shey Shikkar and Kang Chunne, both just over 6000 meters, before descending steeply down to the valley floor and along the river.
    A red chorten marks the entrance to Shey. Every Dragon year according to the Tibetan calendar that comes in every 12 years there occurs a grand festival. People from different places and countries come to join this festival. We camp for the night.

  • Day 11 - Sep 01: 1st day of festival (Opening Ceremony) (4343m)

    You will participate in the festival. The grand celebration will start with prayers and blessing speech by the renowned Rinpoche’s and Lamas. The local inhabitants, as well as monks from various monasteries, participate in the festivities, making it a truly vibrant and spiritually charged event. There will be dance, singing, picnic lunch and traditional dance by old age people. Back to camp and have dinner after the first day is over. embracing the peaceful atmosphere and reflecting on the day's trekking experience.

  • Day 12 - Sep 02: 2nd Day of festival - Full Moon (Crystal Mountain Kora)(4343m)

    The Shey Gompa festival not only showcases the spiritual devotion of the people but also serves as a means to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of the region. It attracts researchers, scholars, and tourists interested in exploring the unique traditions and practices of the Dolpo region. You will be joining the local people for the tour of Crystal Mountain. Which is also an important factor of the festival. It is believed that a crystal mountain is a place where actually, Buddhist masters have a walkthrough. Preserving the tradition of ancestors means, they value it a lot more than it looks like. The kora will take probably, 5-6 hours of walking. You will enjoy the walk as you will find a lot of diversity, the traditional and cultural dressed by the locals will make you more curious about the way of their life. Take time to interact with locals to understand it much better. Back to camp, have tea or coffee and our kitchen team will start cooking the dinner.   • Day 13 - Sep 03: 3rd Day of festival 4343m

    During the Shey Gompa festival, devotees and pilgrims undertake arduous journeys to reach the monastery. They come from different parts of Nepal, as well as from neighboring Tibet, to witness and participate in the sacred rituals. Many pilgrims also bring offerings such as butter lamps, prayer flags, and religious artifacts to present the monastery and seek blessings. All the villagers performed famous horse racing and archery. Early evening, they will perform traditional dance and singing to entertain the visitors who have come from far distances.

  • Day 14 - Sep 04: 4th Day of festival (4343m)

    One of the most awe-inspiring aspects of the festival is the "Masked Dance" or "Cham Dance" performed by the monks. Clad in vibrant costumes and ornate masks representing deities, demons, and various mythical figures, the dancers engage in intricate and symbolic movements to enact ancient Buddhist stories and teachings. The dance is accompanied by traditional music and chanting, creating an enchanting and mesmerizing atmosphere. Enjoy the day at festival and interact with local people to understand it more deeply. After all the activities, self-exploring time and you could walk around to prepare for the next adventures trekking.

  • Day 15 - Sep 05: Shey Gompa to Namgung Gompa (4360m) crossing Shey La Pass 5hrs

    Today we will explore Shey Gompa. It is said to be about an 800-year-old monastery, with murals inside and an ancient scroll describing the mythology behind Crystal Mountain. The monastery is locally known as Shelri Sumdho Gompa.
    Shey Festival, the summer festival observed by the people of Dolpo with huge enthusiasm is hosted at Shey Gompa. Peter Matthiessen wrote quite a lot about his stay in Shey in 'The Snow Leopard', and it was shown in Eric Valli’s movie ‘Caravan' as Thinley's son's gompa. After the exploration of Shey Gompa as the trek begins, it follows the trail beside Sephu Khola for almost a couple of hours.
    The landscapes during this part of the trek are typical Dolpo landscapes- barren and enchanting. Then we begin to climb up towards the top of Shey La Pass, which is almost two hours of hike. The acme of Shey La Pass west of Shey, rewards us with the magnificent views of Mustang to the East, Tibet to the North, and Kanjiroba, Kagmara, and Riu Dhukta, or the Crystal Mountain, to the West. The final push downhill from the pass, which is almost 2 hours of hike brings us to Namgung. We spend our night at Namgung, a local nomadic herding settlement

  • Day 16 - Sep 06: Namgong Gompa to Saldang (3770m) 6hrs

    Before setting out towards Saldang, we explore the monastery of Namgung set on the flanking cliff. As the trek from Namgong Gompa begins we follow Namga Khola cross past more summer herding spots and emerge out of spur for a short hike down to Saldang. Saldang is a beautiful village with lots of dry land surrounded by hills. Amchi tradition and Buddhism in Dolpo thrive here at Saldang. We'll get a chance to visit some local houses, drink some salt butter tea or change (Tibetan barley beer) and sample the local fare at Saldang.

  • Day 17 - Sep 07: Saldang to Komash Village (4210m) 5/6hrs

    Today we trek for six hours and reach the village of Komash. Initially, the trail follows the Saldang Lek along the Rapyha Khola to the barren hillside. Exiting out to the elevated ridge of almost 4500m, the trail descends down steeply to Komash Village a village which bears similarity to a Tibetan village. Overnight in tents at Komash.

  • Day 18 - Sep 08: Komash Village to Shimen (3885m) 5hrs

    As we trek from Komash village we may sight some endangered animals like snow leopards or Blue sheep. On the way, we pass small villages. The landscapes in the vicinity are full of highland deserts with few shrub-like vegetation. After almost five hours of comfortable hiking, we arrive at Shimen. Overnight in the tented camps at Shimen.

  • Day 19 - Sep 09: Shimen to Tinje (4110m) 5hrs

    Today the trail goes by the side of Panjyang Khola. There are some villages and gompas on the way to Tinje. Tinje is a very beautiful valley. There is a natural airstrip where once a British aircraft had landed and taken off.

  • Day 20 - Sep 10: Tinje Village to Yak Kharka (4500m) 6hrs

    From the village of Tinje, we trek to Yak Kharka. Initially, the trail to Yak Kharka chases the trail beside the Panjyan River to the small settlement of Chhamdang. Beyond Chhamdang the trek along the river bank continues to the confluence of Chholtam Khola and Panjyan Khola. Trekking further we cross the bridge over Thalum Khola, which flows from Thalum Lek, and arrive at Yak Kharka. Yak Kharka is an open grazing ground for yaks and sheep. The grassy meadow of Yak Kharka makes for an excellent camping site.

  • Day 21 - Sep 11: Yak Kharka to Tokyu (4209m) 5/6 hrs

    As the trek begins today, we cross the bridge over Sulun Khola. Crossing the bridges over several streams the trek arrives at Choila North Pass 5040m. The trail to Choila North BC is an arduous and difficult trek. Almost two hours of steep climb brings us to the top of Choila Pass from where the fascinating sights of Tokyu camps are seen. A downhill and leveled trail beside Choila Khola brings us to Tokyu, where we settle our camps for the overnight stay.

  • Day 22 - Sep 12: Tokyo to Dho Tarap (3944m) 3/4hrs

    Today after breakfast we walk towards Dho Tarap, it is nearly one and half hours walk. We spend the day at Dho Tarap. Dho Tarap is a large village decorated with colorful prayer flags.
    There are chortens, mani walls, and monasteries. Villagers grow wheat, buckwheat, barley, potatoes, and green vegetables in terraced fields. There are tea houses, shops with minimal supplies, and lodges. The people closely resemble the Khampas of Tibet, the men with a ponytail and red tassels coiled around their heads.
    The women sport musk deer teeth necklaces. Dho Tarap has a maze of mud-brick Tibetan houses which was featured in Eric Valli’s famous movie 'Caravan', the village where Karma and his band of young Dolpo-pa, and Thinley and his older group of Dolpo-pa, set off with their salt to trade for barley over the high passes.
    We will enjoy a nature tour and a cultural program consisting of traditional Tibetan dances and songs presented by the villagers. Here we have few major sites that are worthwhile exploring around Dho Tarap.
    Including Ribo Bumpa Monastery & Drakmar Dewa Monastery, the vicinity around Dho Tarap has many other important monasteries which include Mekhyim Monastery, Dhoro Monastery, and a Bon Gompa of Shipichowk among others. So make your decision wisely while choosing the monastery you prefer to explore from the pool of many.

  • Day 23 - Sep 13: Dho Tarap to Naworpani ((3780m) 6hrs

    Today, the trek covers a long distance. As we start the trek, we hike along the flat trail beside Tarap Khola to Mirububane Khola Dovan- the confluence of Tarap Khola and Mirubabane Khola. Then the trek slides down to the bridge over Klang Khloa at Langa Camp.
    The trail continues to chase Tarap Khola with picturesque views of arid landscapes. As the trek goes further the trail emerges and cross passes several villages like Sisaul, Gyamghar, and Toltol and finally we come to Nawarpani for the night stop.

  • Day 24 - Sep 14: Naworpani to Lashicap (2775m) 5/6hrs

    The trek today begins on the trail that runs beside Tarap Khola. Gradually, the view in the vicinity begins to change. The green forest starts to emerge. For a while, we slide up high above Tarap Khola to Lamchaur. Cross-passing Lahini Odar, we descend down the hill to Chhedhul Gompa.
    Once again, after a short walk along the trail beside Tarap Khola we arrive at Laisicap for the camp.

  • Day 25 - Sep 15: Lashicap to Dunai (2140m) 5/6hrs

    Now on we trek along the green woodlands high above the Thuli Bheri River towards Tarakot. Just before arriving at Tarakot, we cross the bridge over the small stream.
    The last day of the trek is no less interesting. We trek on the trail that stretches beside the Thuli Bheri River to Dunai via Lawan and Byasgad. The trail has a forested region on its west, the Thuli Bheri River, and cultivated terraced fields on its East. We have our lunch at Dunai.

  • Day 26 - Sep 16: Dunai to Juphal (2140m) 3/4hrs

    The trail goes by the side of the Bheri River till Kalagawda and then the trail ascends towards Juphal. A couple of hours trek from Dunai brings us to Juphal.

  • Day 27 - Sep 17: Juphal to Nepalgunj flight and Nepalgunj to Kathmandu flight

    From Juphal we fly to Nepalgunj by early morning flight. In Nepalgunj, you will have to spend some time looking around the airport settlement or can go to the hotel and have a rest. By afternoon flight you will be flying to Kathmandu. Our representative will pick you up at Kathmandu airport and will take you to the hotel.
