The Shey Gompa festival is a grand and significant celebration that takes place once every 12 years in the remote region of Dolpa, Nepal. This festival holds immense cultural and religious importance for the local people and draws pilgrims and visitors from far and wide.
Dolpo is a secluded and picturesque valley nestled in the Himalayan mountains, known for its rugged terrain, ancient monasteries, and rich Tibetan Buddhist heritage. Shey Gompa, also known as Shey Monastery, is one of the most revered monasteries in the region and serves as the focal point for the festival. The festival is celebrated in honor of The ritual of Kora (circumambulating) the Holy Crystal Mountain was instituted by an ascetic from Tibet by the name of Drupthop  Singhe Yeshi, who, according to mythology, rode a snow lion to triumph over the evil spirits and demons of Crystal Mountain ( Shey-Rivo Drukta). Druptop Singye Yeshi is believed to have meditated in the caves surrounding Shey Gompa, bestowing blessings and enlightenment upon the land and its people.

Every 12 years of the Tibetan calendar a ceremony is held at Shey. It has been practiced for centuries. It has been a ritual of the Dolpo people. Along with the time now, it is celebrated more as a festival than a ritual. The Tibetan calendar represents 12 years by 12 different animals. Mouse, Bull, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Monkey, Bird, Dog, and, Pig.  Every year has its specific pilgrims. For example, Boudhanath Stupa is done in the year of Bird. Mt. Kailash in the year of Horse. And Crystal Mountain in the year of Dragon.

The last festival was held in September 2012 year of Dragon. This time it will be held in 2024 after 12 years. It is a very auspicious festival where all the Dolpopas gather at an auspicious place at an auspicious time. At this auspicious festival, almost all Dolpopas do their best to attend this auspicious festival.  Every year this festival gets more attention due to its uniqueness and authenticity. Now tourist people around the world are waiting for the festivals.

The festival starts on the 1st of September in 2024. 1st September is the opening ceremony and different renowned Lama and Rinpoches will deliver many pujas and blessing speeches along with Chief Guest Honorable Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dhal (Parchanda). There will be dance, singing, and, drama performances from the other schools of Upper Dolpo.

Similarly, the 2nd day the full moon is the main and most auspicious day. On this day early morning people circumambulate (Kora) to Crystal Mountain with packed lunch. It will take a whole day to make a round to Crystal Mountain. Some people prefer to make a round barefoot. In Buddhism, there is a belief that doing Kora barefoot will wash your sins. Similarly, people take the crystal from the mountains or stone to their hometown as a blessing or gift from Crystal Mountain. People dance on top of the mountain and enjoy it to the fullest. On the way, you get to visit Tsakhang Gompa one the oldest Gompa in Dolpo. The Gompa is built on the rock wall. Still, Gomchen (Meditator ) stays there and practices Buddhism and prays for world peace.

    As you fly in Kathmandu through the stunning view of high and fully snow covered mountain welcoming you. As soon as you landed our representative will be waiting outside to receive you. He will take you to the designated hotel with personal car or taxi and will be helping you for the check in at Hotel. He / She will take briefing about the trek. He will collect the passport for the permit. Freshen up, self-exploring to the historic stupas and temple if you are not jet lack.

  • Day 2 - Aug 18: Kathmandu – Pokhara ( 822m) 25/30mins

    Starting the day relax and slow morning and prepare for the trek. Our agent will get the official permit for the national park and TIMS at morning. Lunch at hotel and our driver will pick up you from the hotel at afternoon and drive towards the airport, procced for the security check-in. Board the flight and the duration will be approximately 25-30 minutes and you will arrive Pokhara early evening. Once you arrive Pokhara, drive to the hotel and check-in to your hotel and freshen up. Head out to explore the beautiful lakeside city of Pokhara. Start by Phewa lake, the second-largest lake in Nepal. You can take a boat ride on the lake and enjoy the stunning views of the surrounding Annapurna mountain range. If possible, Afterward, visit the International Mountain Museum, which provides insights into the culture, geology, and mountaineering history of the Himalayas. It's a fascinating place to learn about the mountains and the Sherpa culture. As the evening approaches, visit the Old Bazaar area of Pokhara. It offers a vibrant atmosphere with narrow streets, local shops, and traditional architecture. You can explore the market, shop for souvenirs, and taste some local snacks. Dinner at hotel and off to bed early.

  • Day 3 - Aug 19: Pokhara – Jomsom – trek to Phalek (3175m ) 4hrs

    Take an early morning flight from Pokhara to Jomsom. The flight duration is approximately 20-25 minutes, and it offers breathtaking views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges. Upon arrival in Jomsom, collect your belongings and prepare for the trek to Phalek. Make sure you have all the necessary supplies, including water, snacks, and appropriate trekking gear. Start your trek from Jomsom towards Phalek. The trek will take you through scenic landscapes, traditional villages, and along the Kali Gandaki River. As you trek, enjoy the beauty of the Mustang region, known for its unique landscapes, barren hills, and Tibetan-influenced culture. Take breaks whenever needed and soak in the stunning views around you. Arrive at Phalek in the evening. Phalek is a small village located at an elevation of around 3,000 meters. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and a tranquil environment. Have a dinner at guesthouse and off to bed early.

  • Day 4 - Aug 20: Phalek – Santa ( 3777m ) 5/6hrs

    Start your day early in Phalek. Enjoy a wholesome breakfast and prepare yourself for the trek to Santa. Make sure you have enough water, snacks, and appropriate trekking gear. Begin your trek from Phalek towards Santa. The trail will take you through diverse landscapes, including lush forests, picturesque valleys, and charming villages.
    As you trek, take in the natural beauty of the surroundings and enjoy the tranquility of the remote Himalayan region. The trail may involve some uphill and downhill sections, so pace yourself accordingly and take breaks as needed. Around midday, find a suitable spot for a picnic lunch. You can sit back, relax, and savor your packed meal while immersing yourself in the serene environment of the mountains. Resume your trek from the lunch spot and continue towards Santa. Take in the scenic views and keep an eye out for any unique flora and fauna that you may encounter along the way. Arrive in Santa in the late afternoon or early evening. Santa is a small village nestled amidst the mountains, offering a tranquil setting and a chance to experience the local culture. Rest and rejuvenate after a day of trekking, taking in the peaceful ambiance of the village. Have dinner, warm local meal with cozy environment of mountain village and off to bed early. From here, our local team will join and they will take responsibility for camp and cooking for the team.

  • Day 5 - Aug 21: Santa - Galdan Guldun ( 4247m ) 5/6hrs

    Start your day early in Santa. Enjoy a hearty breakfast and prepare yourself for the trek to Galdan Guldun. Ensuring you have all the necessary supplies for the day.
    Begin your trek from Santa towards Galdan Guldun. The trail will take you through diverse terrain, including forests, meadows, and rocky paths. Follow the trail markers and signs to stay on the right path. As you trek, immerse yourself in the natural beauty surrounding you. Enjoy the crisp mountain air, the sound of birds chirping, and the stunning views of the Himalayan landscape. Find a suitable spot for a midday break and have a picnic lunch. Take a moment to rest, refuel, and soak in the tranquility of the mountains. Enjoy the panoramic views and the serenity of the surroundings.
    After the lunch break, continue your trek towards Galdan Guldun. The trail may involve ascending and descending sections, so pace yourself accordingly and take breaks when needed. Admire the changing scenery as you make progress along the trail. As you approach Galdan Guldun, be prepared for some uphill sections. Take your time and enjoy the challenge as you near your destination. Keep an eye out for any unique flora, fauna, or scenic viewpoints along the way. Arrive at Galdan Guldun in the late afternoon or early evening. Galdan Guldun is a picturesque village surrounded by mountains, offering a peaceful and remote setting. Our team will settle down the camp and start the cooking while you are setting you your comfortable tent.

  • Day 6 - Aug 22: Galdan Guldun – Nulungsumda (4987m) via Jungbenla pas (5550m) 7hrs

    Start your day very early in Galdan Guldun. Have a substantial breakfast and pack your trekking essentials, including warm clothing, sufficient water, snacks and sunscreen. Begin your trek from Galdan Guldun, following the trail towards Jungbenla Pass. The trail will gradually ascend, passing through alpine meadows, rocky terrain, and possibly snow-covered sections as you gain elevation.
    Pace yourself carefully and take regular breaks to rest and hydrate. Listen to your body and pay attention to any signs of altitude sickness. Adjust your pace accordingly and communicate with your fellow trekkers and guide. During the midday, find a suitable spot for a rest and enjoy a packed lunch. Take the opportunity to refuel your energy and appreciate the magnificent mountain scenery around you. Ensure you're well-hydrated and rest adequately before continuing the trek. Resume your trek towards Jungbenla Pass after the lunch break. As you ascend further, the trail may become steeper and more challenging. Be cautious and maintain a steady pace, taking small steps to conserve energy. As you approach the high-altitude Jungbenla Pass, the landscape might transition into rugged and rocky terrain. Take extra care while navigating these sections and be mindful of your footing. once you reach the summit of Jungbenla Pass at an altitude of 5550m, take a moment to celebrate your achievement and enjoy the panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Begin your descent from Jungbenla Pass towards Nulungsumda. The trail will lead you through a combination of rocky sections, loose scree, and possibly snow patches.
    Take your time while descending to ensure stability and minimize the risk of slipping or falling. Use trekking poles for support and maintain a controlled pace.
    Arrive in Nulungsumda in the late afternoon or early evening. Nulungsumda is a picturesque valley amidst the mountains, offering a serene and peaceful atmosphere.
    Our team will pitch the tent and settle down the camp. Preparing the dinner and have early dinner and of to bed early.

  • Day 7 - Aug 23: Nulungsumda – Charka ( 4302m ) 6/7hrs

    Trekking from Nulungsumda to Charka is an adventurous journey through the remote and rugged terrain of the Himalayas. Start your day early in Nulungsumda. Enjoy a nourishing breakfast and prepare your trekking gear, including proper clothing, sturdy footwear, water, snacks, and sunscreens. Begin your trek from Nulungsumda towards Charka. The trail will take you through breathtaking landscapes, including rocky terrain, river crossings, and high mountain passes. Follow the trail markers and signs along the way. Pace yourself and maintain a steady rhythm as you traverse the challenging terrain. Take short breaks whenever needed, allowing yourself to rest and hydrate adequately.   • Day 8 - Aug 24: Rest Day ( 4302m)

    Enjoy the nourishing breakfast and freshen up to start the rest day slowly. Explore the village and Bon Monastery to understand better the way of life and importance of cultural and traditional. Interact with local people to build the connection with them. Walk through the village and take a time to immerse yourself to the beautiful landscapes, with stunning surrounding mountains and valleys. Don’t miss the old bon stupas along the way and make sure you get the memorizing rest day. Back to the camp, Enjoy the freshly cooked lunch and relax, take a time to refuel your body. If needed, do the laundry, freshen up. Free afternoon where you can do self-exploring of the village without guide, surely you will have wonderful experience. Not much activities for the afternoon. Snacks at 4PM and our kitchen team will start with preparation of dinner. Enjoy the warm and cozy dinner and early to bed.

  • Day 9 - Aug 25: Charka – Rapka (4500m )via Mola pass (5030m) 5/6hrs

Begin your trek from Namgung, following the trail that leads towards Shey Gompa via Shey La Pass. The trail may involve a challenging ascent as you make your way towards the high mountain pass. Find a suitable spot around midday for a rest and enjoy a packed lunch. Take time to refuel, relax, and admire the stunning mountain views that surround you. Ensure you stay hydrated and take into account the weather conditions. Resume your trek after the midday break, continuing towards Shey Gompa. As you ascend towards Shey La Pass, the terrain may become steeper and more challenging. Take it slow and steady, allowing your body to adjust to the altitude. Upon reaching Shey La Pass at an altitude of 5100m, take a moment to appreciate the breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding Himalayan peaks. Capture this awe-inspiring moment and savor the achievement of reaching the pass. Begin your descent from Shey La Pass towards Shey Gompa. The trail will lead you through descending sections, with varying landscapes and stunning vistas as you make your way towards your destination.
    Arrive at Shey Gompa in the late afternoon or early evening. Shey Gompa is a remote monastery nestled in the mountains, renowned for its spiritual significance and unique cultural heritage. Take some time to explore the monastery, interact with the resident monks, and immerse yourself in the peaceful atmosphere. Admire the ancient murals, sculptures, and religious artifacts that adorn the monastery. embracing the peaceful atmosphere and reflecting on the day's trekking experience.

  • Day 16 - Sep 01: 1st Day of Shey Gompa Festival ( opening ceremony ) (4343m)

    Today there will be the opening ceremony of the 67th Shelri Dugdra (Shey) Festival 2024 in the presence of Chief Guest Rt. honorable prime minister Pushpa kmal Dhal (Prachanda), along with Special guests and other guests.

    The opening ceremony will further go on with ritual and cultural events.

  • Day 17 - Sep 02: 2nd Day of festival - New Moon (Crystal Mountain Kora)(4343m)

    This day is considered very curial day as people will wake up early in the morning to circumambulate (Kora) of the Crystal Mountain. This will take almost a whole day the approximate timing of the full Kora is 7/8 hrs.

    In the evening, there will be Phowa (Transference of Consciousness) by His Holiness Kyaje Drikung Chetsang Rinpoche

  • Day 18 - Sep 03: 3rd Day of festival 4343m

    Today the 3 day of the Shey Festiva, there will be ritual events, teachings and sermons by His Eminent Kyapje Menri Ponlop Rinpoche and H.E. Kyabje Gyangkhang Khentul Rinpoche lead the .

    Afternoon, cultural and religious events, Amchi and Doctors will conduct medical camps, Horse Race, Archery and others make the event more colorful.

  • Day 19 - Sep 04: 4th Day the closing ceremony of the festival

    Today the closing ceremony of the Shey Festival. Today is also consider as one of the major day as the three Rinpoches will bestow a Longevity Empowerment to the entire attendees and devotees.

    There will be Cultural shows, Mask dances, performances from the schools and the traditional dances in the afternoon. The local will perform the cultural dance rest of the day and likewise the ceremony will be close.

  • Day 20 - Sep 05: Shey Gompa – Nangdala H.C ( 4100m) 5hrs

    Start your day early in Shey gompa. Have a nutritious breakfast and ensure you have all the necessary supplies for the day. Begin your trek from Shey Gompa, following the trail that leads towards Nangdala H.C. The trail may involve ascending and little bit of descending sections as you traverse the rugged terrain and scenic landscapes.
    Maintain a steady pace, and take short breaks whenever needed to rest and hydrate. Enjoy the natural beauty surrounding you and take in the panoramic views of the mountains. Find a suitable spot around midday for a rest and enjoy a packed lunch. Take time to refuel, relax, and soak in the serenity of the mountains. Ensure you stay hydrated and take into account the weather conditions. Resume your trek after the midday break, continuing towards Nangdala H.C. Embrace the changing vistas and immerse yourself in the tranquility of the natural surroundings. Arrival at Nangdala H.C. (Approximately 4,600m/15,091ft) A high-altitude camping site in the Himalayas, in the late afternoon or early evening. Set up your camping equipment and take in the breathtaking views that surround you. Spend some time exploring the area and absorbing the peaceful ambiance. Take photographs, relax, and appreciate the solitude of the mountains. Early dinner, off to bed.

  • Day 21 - Sep 06: Nangdala H.C – Sallaghari(3660m) via Nangdala pass (5330m) 6/7 hrs

    Start your day early at Nangdala H.C. Have a hearty breakfast and ensuring you have all the essential supplies for the day. Begin your trek from Nangdala H.C., following the trail that leads towards Sallaghari via Nangdala Pass. The trail may involve steep ascents, rocky terrain, and possible exposure to the elements. Pace yourself and take regular breaks to rest, hydrate, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains. Upon reaching Nangdala Pass, take a moment to celebrate your achievement and marvel at the panoramic vistas of the surrounding peaks and valleys. Capture the incredible scenery and enjoy the sense of accomplishment.
    Begin your descent from Nangdala Pass towards Sallaghari. The trail will lead you through a mix of steep descents and more gradual slopes, offering breathtaking views as you make your way down. Find a suitable spot around midday for a rest and have a packed lunch. Take time to refuel, relax, and appreciate the natural beauty of the area. Keep an eye on the weather conditions and adjust your plans accordingly. Continue the trek towards Sallaghari. Take caution while descending, especially on rocky or uneven terrain. Use trekking poles for stability and maintain a controlled pace. Take time to explore the area, set up your campsite, or find suitable accommodation if available.     Setup the camp, enjoy the tea or coffee. Our kitchen team will be cooking dinner. Early dinner and off for sleep.

  • Day 22 - Sep 07: Sallaghari – Phoksundo ( Rigmo village) (3640m) 5hrs

Begin your trek from Sallaghari, following the trail that leads towards Phoksundo Lakeside Village.   • Day 23 - Sep 08: Exploring day at Rigmo village / Rest day (3640m)

    Start your day with a leisurely breakfast in Phoksundo Rigmo village. Take in the serene atmosphere and prepare yourself for a day of exploration. Begin by exploring Phoksundo Rigmo Village itself. Take a stroll through the narrow alleys and soak in the unique architecture of the traditional Tibetan-style houses.
    Engage with the friendly locals, learn about their way of life, and immerse yourself in the local culture. Observe their daily activities and gain insights into the traditional practices that have been preserved for generations. Make your way to the ancient Bon Monastery, which is approximately 6000 years old and holds significant cultural and religious importance. Marvel at the architectural beauty and intricate details of the monastery. Explore the interior of the monastery, where you may find ancient artifacts, religious relics, and stunning murals depicting Tibetan Buddhist and Bon teachings. Take time for quiet contemplation and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of this sacred place. Take a break for lunch in a local eatery or enjoy a picnic amidst the natural beauty surrounding the village.   • Day 24 - Sep 09: Rigmo village – Chhepka village (2678m) 5/6hrs

Begin your trek from Rigmo Village, following the trail that leads towards Chhepka Village. The trail may involve a mix of ascents, descents, and traversing through diverse landscapes. Enjoy the natural beauty surrounding you, including picturesque valleys, meandering rivers, and traditional villages along the way. Lunch at a suitable spot village called Rechi. Take time to
    refuel, relax, and soak in the tranquility of the surroundings. Consider the weather conditions and adjust your plans accordingly. Resume your trek after the midday break, continuing towards Chhepka Village. Follow the well-marked trail, keeping an eye out for signs indicating the direction to the village. Arrive at Chhepka Village in the late afternoon or early evening. Chhepka is a charming traditional village nestled amidst the mountains and is known for its warm hospitality. Our team will settle down the camp in the middle of village so you have stunning view of village at night. They will start cooking. Take some time to explore the village, interact with the friendly locals, and appreciate the unique culture and architecture. Immerse yourself in the serenity of this remote Himalayan village. Early dinner with warm ambiance of the small village. Early, off to bed.

  • Day 25 - Sep 10: Chhepka – Suligad Ghat (3/4hrs) – drive jeep to Jhupal (2475m)

    Start your day early in Chhepka Village. Have a hearty breakfast and ensure you have all your belongings ready for the journey. Begin your trek from Chhepka Village towards Suligad Ghat. Follow the trail that leads you through scenic landscapes, crossing rivers and forests. Enjoy the natural beauty of the surroundings and keep an eye out for wildlife and bird species that may inhabit the area. Reach Suligad Ghat, which is located on the banks of a Beri river. This is the point where you will transition from trekking to a jeep ride. Take a break to rest, refresh, and prepare for the jeep ride. Board a jeep at Suligad Ghat and embark on a scenic drive towards Jhupal. The journey will take you through picturesque landscapes, passing through villages and valleys. Enjoy the views of the surrounding mountains and immerse yourself in the beauty of the region. Reach Jhupal, a small town located in the Dolpa district. This serves as the gateway to the remote Dolpo region of Nepal. Take some time to explore Jhupal, visit the local markets, and soak in the atmosphere of this Himalayan town.

  • Day 26 - Sep 11: Jhupal – Nepalgunj- Kathmandu with connecting flight (1400m)

    Early wake up, arrive to the Jhupal airport and check-in for your flight. Board the flight to Nepalgunj, which is closest major city with an airport. The flight will take you to Nepalgunj in 35 minutes. Arrive Nepalgunj, procced to the domestic terminal and complete any necessary transfer procedures. Take a time to rest, grab some snack, or explore the facilities while waiting for connecting flight. Check-in for your connecting flight to Kathmandu. Board the flight and enjoy the stunning view as you make your way back to the capital city Kathmandu. The flight duration will be 1hour approximately. Arrive at airport in Kathmandu, receive your luggage and exit the airport. Our personal driver will drive you to the hotel and free time afterwards.
