The deepest and the largest lake in Nepal, Rara Lake is considered the Queen of Lakes. Spread out to almost 11 sq. km Rara Lake nestles at the altitude of 3000m inside Rara National Park of Mugu District. A short excursion to Rara Lake with Explore Dolpo is one big holiday in Nepal, that takes you to Nepal’s one of the most beautiful places.

The short excursion of Rara Lake begins at Talcha Airport after the short flight from Nepalgunj. A couple of hours trek from Talcha takes you to this stunning Lake. Enjoy the camping stay at exciting Rara Lake shore and enjoy the luxury of nature. Explore around the equally magnificent vicinity around the lake for couple of days before you fly back to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj Airport.

Rara Lake and Rara National Park are complement to each other. Dense forests of conifers and myriads of species of floral herbal plants surround the lake. Additionally, the stunning views of snow capped peaks reflect on the crystal clear water of turquoise Lake Rara. The forested hills surrounding Rara are so wonderful and Chhuchemara Hill 4090m among them offers extraordinary views of Himalayan Ranges and the lake itself.

It is the best point to sight the striking view of oval shaped Rara Lake with lush vegetation and snowcapped peaks rising just above it. Since in the neighborhood we do not see any signs of civilization so, the chances of sightings the species of migratory birds like Coots and mammals like Red Panda is pretty high during Rara Lake Excursion. Rara National Park is the home to 20 species of mammals 215 species of birds so sighting of alpine animal is quite a possibility during Short Excursion to Rara Lake.

  • Day 01: Kathmandu to Nepalgunj Flight/Drive

    From Kathmandu we take a bus or fly on any domestic carrier to Nepalgunj. Nepalgunj , a town in the western Terai , is very close to the Indian border and the Bardia Nationl Park. It is a major transport hub for western, mid-western and far-western regions of Nepal. Overnight at hotel or lodge.

    Rara Lake Excursion

  • Day 02: Nepalgunj to Talcha flight/ 40mins and Talcha to Rara walk/ 2 hrs

    From Nepalgunj Airport we fly to Nepal's one of the mountainous Airports of far-flung west Talcha. The Airport in Talcha lies at the elevation of 2735m. The forty minutes flight over the forested hills and gorges brings us to Talcha. From Talcha we begin our trek.

    A couple of hours trek to Rara Lake from Talcha winds through beautiful forested region. The trek is easy and involves no challenging walk. On the trek to Rara Lake, we get witness the cultural delights of rural Nepal, which are extremely unique and fascinating.

    On our arrival at Rara, we set up our camps at the lake shore in one of the ideal sites. After the lunch, we set out to explore Rara Lake. The wonderful boat ride on the most pristine lake of widespread lake is a fascinating experience.

    During the boating we explore the lake shore of in several corners of the lake, where we witness some of the most beautiful floral species and herbal plants. Overnight in camp at Rara Lake.

  • Day 03: Stay in Rara

    Today, we set out to explore around the Lake. We climb up the Chuchemara Hill 4090m. The climb is fascinatingly wonderful ninety minutes hike. From the hilltop we get to see the beautiful views in all directions and in all sides.

    To the north we see snowcapped peaks offering wonderful backdrop to Rara Lake and lush vegetation of Rara National Park.

    We could sight the beautiful green hills holding stunning Rara Lake in the middle. And down we could see the mesmerizing view of the lake itself. After the hike to Chhuchemara Hill, we begin to explore around the nearby vicinity. At the end of the day we return back to our camps for the overnight stay.

  • Day 04: Rara to Talcha and Talcha to Nepalgunj flight

    Today, we trek back along the retracing trail to Talcha. Do not forget to look back and around for the last view of Queen of Lakes. On our arrival to Talcha, we board an eighteen seater twin otter aircraft to Nepalgunj. On our arrival to Nepalgunj we, are transferred our hotel in the city.

  • Day 05: Nepalgunj to Kathmandu

    Today, we fly back to Kathmandu. Once you arrive to Kathmandu, we escort you to your hotel in the city.
